This is the 13th annual report on the state of the HIV prevention research field. This year's report offers unique context and a timely critique for issues that were center stage in Vienna. The report argues that the biomedical prevention research field must develop strategies for pursuing new scientific leads and following through on promising developments without the guarantee of expanded financial resources. As the implications of recent vaccine and microbicide breakthroughs need to be explained clearly to diverse audiences, this year's report also weighs the impact of developments in ARV-based prevention, debates around "test-and-treat," and treatment shortages on the global AIDS response.
