Theoretical Approaches to Participatory Communication - Exploring the Links Between Structuration Theory and Participatory Action Research
by Edith Friesen
In this chapter, the author notes that "both PAR (participatory action research) and structuration theory reject the objectivist, value-free tenets of positivist social science. Both are concerned with praxis, or the relationship between knowledge, agency and action. Finally, both are interested in the ability of social research to facilitate change." In her treatment of these connections, the author explores such central structurationist ideas as the "double hermeneutic", and the "dialogical model".
